The old castle<\/p>

What did the castle look like?<\/em><\/p>

Since Stollenburg Castle was destroyed in 1329, only meager remnants and the two ring walls offer an incomplete picture of the once proud fortress. This seat of the knightly families Stoll von Staufenberg and Tarant is described as originally a Roman structure. Stollenberg Hill rises majestically on the ridge between the Durbach and Rench valleys. The outer ring wall of the “sunken castle” measures a full 300 paces, each three feet in circumference (1 foot = approx. 30 cm). It provided enough space for presumably two families, a dozen retainers with their wives, children, and all their belongings. <\/p>
