Stollenburg Castle Ruins 40
The Stollenburg or Old Castle was the seat of the Staufenberg knightly families “STOLL” and “TARAND”. The first seals of the “Stoll” and “Tarant” can be found in a document from the year 1273 in the General State Archives Karlsruhe. The Stollenberg is mentioned in the old legends: “The Melusine Tree”, “The Treasure in the Stollenberg”, “The Bailiff’s Son of Staufenberg”, “The Ghost Carriage” and “The Ghost Path”.

STOLL ___________ TARAND
The former castle complex is situated at an altitude of around 400 m and offered the inhabitants a wide view into the Rench valley as well as into the Rhine plain and the Durbach valley. It still poses a puzzle for researchers. The castle’s origins are partly believed to date back to Roman or even Celtic times. “Stoll” and “Tarand” were the knightly families who populated the castle hill in the Middle Ages with their families, servants, horses and large household goods.
In einem Streit der Staufenberger mit dem Bischof von Straßburg wurden sowohl die Stollenburg als auch die Burg Staufenberg im Jahre 1329 weitgehend zerstört. While Staufenberg Castle was rebuilt, Stollenburg Castle has since become nothing more than a decaying mound of rubble.
